  1. Developing a Windows Phone 7 Stock Quoting application to leverage features such as MPN, Linq, Threading, and MVVM

    September 16, 2010

This talk will  describe Windows Phone 7 development for a Stock quoting and Alerting demonstration application to highlight the phone's capabilities and it's development environment.   Some of the development features shared will be Threading, Thread communication using messaging, WebClient access, MVVM Light, Isolated Storage, LINQ, Behaviors, and Push (Microsoft Push Notifications, or MPN).

Stock quoting was chosen as the domain as it lends itself to using these features.  The application uses Yahoo Financial as the quotes' source  however the data access is abstracted and therefore easily changed.   We will start by building the User Experience(UX) and data access to display the quotes on the phone. In this mode the user is able to select the stocks they want to follow and set alerts that are fired when a threshold is exceeded. In the end,  these alerts are the real value to the application. The interactive use should be minimized as the battery usage and bandwidth requirements are too great. We will then move the application to a push model where the alerts are fired from an Azure server application using MPC.

Silverlight and an implementation comparison between WCF and RIA Services

We will look at two main approaches to developing Silverlight 4 Data driven application using traditional WCF and also the newly introduced RIA Services.  Using two possible patterns we will create very simple applications. We will look at pros and cons of each of the approaches. We will then look at some of each of the approaches. We will then look at some of the real world examples utilizing each of the above approaches and have some nice open ended discussions and find out how we can best utilize to improve our development.

    ODUG Event Information

This session focuses on introducing attendees to the Model-View-Presenter pattern, support for which was recently introduced in the DotNetNuke Core. We'll start with a quick overview of the pattern, compare it to MVC, and then dive right into code. We will start with fundamentals and then develop a full-featured module using this pattern. In order to do justice to the pattern, we will use ASP.NET WebForms controls minimally and implement most of the UI using jQuery plug-ins. Finally, to increase audience participation (both present at the meeting and remote), we will use a hackathon-style model and allow anybody, anywhere to follow along with the presentation and code their own MVP-based solution that they can share online during or after the session. A URL with full instructions for the hackathon will be posted online a few days prior to the meeting.

    About Nik Kalyani

Nik KalyaniNik Kalyani is Co-founder and Strategic Advisor for DotNetNuke Corp., the company that manages the DotNetNuke Open Source project. Kalyani is also Founder and CEO of HyperCrunch. He is a technology entrepreneur with over 18 years of experience in the software industry. He is irrationally exuberant about technology, especially if it has anything to do with the Internet. HyperCrunch is his latest startup business that builds on his knowledge and experience from prior startups, two of them venture-funded.

Kalyani is a creative tinkerer perpetually interested in looking around the corner and figuring out new and interesting ways to make the world a better place. An experienced web developer, he finds the business strategy and marketing aspects of the software business more exciting than writing code. When he does create software, his primary expertise is in creating products with compelling user experiences. Kalyani is most proficient with Microsoft technologies, but has no religious fanaticism about them.

Kalyani has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Western Michigan University. He is a frequent speaker at technology conferences and user group meetings. He lives in Mountain View, California with his wife and daughters. He blogs at http://www.kalyani.com and is @techbubble on Twitter.

    Hackathon

Hackathons are developer events with a goal of increasing developer knowledge on a specific technology aspect in a casual, collaborative environment. They are also designed to encourage participation by people who are not familiar with the technology, basically providing them with an immersive quick start.

    Hackathon Events are:

    • built around a single programming concept (for example: DotNetNuke MVP Pattern)
    • encourage participation locally (at event site) and remotely
    • are broadcast online
    • provide materials and dev environment setup guidelines ahead of time
    • allow anybody to participate
    • are peer-judged by the Hackathon participants
    • have one or more winners who earn the title "Hackmaster"
    • have great prizes for winners and runners up
    • require all submissions to be Open Source with MIT license

  10. Human-Machine Interaction by Derek A. Myers

    November 19, 2009

Most people are becoming familiar with the concept of UX. This is being viewed as HMI (human-machine interaction). HMI goes beyond UX in its efforts to understand the evolving relationship between man and machine. The more one understands the full scope of the nature of human beings, the better equiped software developers and designers are to create applications that better suit the needs of the end user.

Derek A Myers is currently a student at Brevard Community College, majoring in Computer Engineering. Growing up in Titusville. Florida, across from Kennedy Space Center and having a father that worked there as an Aeronautical Engineer, technology has been an ever present constant. Derek has spent considerable time devoted to commercial photography, technical support, manufacturing and selling rock shrimp.
